Solo Travel with Type 1 Diabetes

I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was 22 after dramatically lapsing into a coma! I generally manage my blood sugar pretty well, but there are days when it’s hard. Traveling with type 1 makes things a lot harder – different food, different insulin schedules, different amounts of physical activity. It can be frustrating and disappointing.

Sometimes I really want to take a vacation from having diabetes. Since I haven’t figured out a way to do that yet, for now, I have to travel with diabetes. I’m determined that having diabetes won’t prevent me from solo traveling. I’ve added some of my experiences, ideas, encouragement, and tips to help you solo travel with type 1 diabetes too.

Travel Gear

Travel gear can be a costly investment, even more so if we buy things we don’t need or purchase poor quality gear. This is a good place to find quality products you will love.

Destinations

See where I’ve been and find out what I recommend (or don’t recommend) in each destination. Find a list of must see places and things to do so you don’t miss out.

Or, perhaps you just want a completely planned trip? Check out my itineraries and see if you prefer to delegate the planning portion and get right to the traveling part!

Beauty and Self-Care

You can’t expect a psychologist “not” to talk about self-care, even on a travel blog! Self-care while traveling is extra important, when we are much more susceptible to negative emotions and illness because we have irregular eating and sleeping schedules. Here are some travel-sized products you can bring with you to keep yourself feeling and looking your best, plus some helpful tips and tricks to help you feel your best emotionally while solo traveling.
